Complaints like lower back pain, fatigue, dizziness, and abdominal pain are all among the top twenty-five reasons that patients set up an appointment for either an initial physician consultation or an annual checkup. How does the average doctor deal with patients whose symptoms are hard to explain?
Unfortunately not too well, and the problem is worse when the doctor is a man rather than a woman. The doctor will be aware of an extensive psychiatric literature labeling patients with unexplained symptoms as "somatizers" or "hypochondriacs. |

Instead, these patients sought care for many other concerns, such as backache or abdominal pain, severe fatigue, or problems with sleep, anxiety, and depression.
However, good specialists take an integrative approach to their patients. If you feel that the specialist is considering you simply as the bearer of a specific health problem and not as a whole person, you may need to keep looking for another doctor.
If you have pain, does the specialist adequately address this problem? |

PRECAUTIONS AND ADVERSE REACTIONS
General: In single incidents, cramp-like discomforts of the gastrointestinal tract occur. These cases require a dosage reduction.
Long-term use leads to losses of electrolytes, in particular potassium, and as a result of this to hyperaldosteronism, inhibition of intestinal motility and enhancement of the effect of cardioactive steroids. In rare cases, heart arrhythmias, nephropathies, edemas and accelerated bone deterioration may occur. |

If the ANS is not properly balanced, you can experience diarrhea, constipation, abdominal pain, and fatigue. Moreover, changes in ANS balance can produce POTS as well as a sudden decrease in blood pressure when you are standing.
The Autonomic Nervous System
One major factor in producing autonomic imbalance is stress. We don't know all the ways that stress alters the autonomic nervous system, but we do know that one mechanism is by changing the way you breathe. There is a natural coupling between healthy breathing and the time between individual heart beats. |
| Belly Pain, Altered Bowel Habits, and Irritable Bowel Syndrome
The hallmark of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is abdominal pain with a change in bowel habits. My patient Simone Jay provides an example. She was a thirty-six-year-old secretary who came to see me complaining of crampy pain in her lower abdomen, leading to an urge to use the toilet. When she did, she had loose stools, but the cramps were relieved. In addition, she reported having occasional irr

Porphyrias produce many body signs, which range from light sensitivity and rashes to severe abdominal pain, mental confusion, epileptic seizures, and even paralysis.
SIGN OF THE TIMES
Several members of the British royal family suffered from porphyria. Mary, Queen of Scots, and her son King James I of England had the disease. George III had such a severe case that he became progressively insane and blind. His suffering was graphically depicted in the 1994 British film The Madness of King George.

It is very common and the usual symptoms include loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. The illness usually lasts for around two to three days, after which the sufferer usually recovers without any specific treatment other than the need to replace the fluids and minerals that have been lost. Mild cases can be treated at home with bed rest and plenty of rehydrating fluids. In babies, small children, and the elderly the illness can be more severe and prolonged as there is a risk of dehydration, and it is often necessary to locate the source of the problem. |

| Depending on how the ricin is given, victims develop fever, nausea and abdominal pain or lung damage, and die within a few days of exposure. There is no antidote after the first few hours of exposure, and because symptoms do not appear until later and can mimic other illnesses, people often do not know they have been exposed until it is too late for treatment.
In recent years, there have been several incidents involving ricin in the United States and Europe. |

They found two problems: the criteria didn't consider any duration of symptoms before the diagnosis could be made, and they also did not require abdominal pain, even though the original group recognized it as probably the most common symptom of IBS. That pain can occur anywhere in the abdomen but most often is found in the pelvic area, either on both sides or only one. Subsequent consensus groups modified the original criteria accordingly. |

•Appendicitis. Patients often experience fever or nausea as well as intense stomach pain. The pain typically begins around the navel and shifts to the lower-right abdomen over six to 12 hours. If the appendix isn't surgically removed before it ruptures, it can cause a life-threatening infection called peritonitis. |

Choline
Choline is generally well tolerated, although at very high doses (20 g per day), it can create a fishy odor and cause some nausea, diarrhea, and abdominal pain.18
Calcium
People tolerate doses of calcium supplements of up to 2,000 mg. It was once thought that high levels of calcium supplementation could lead to an increase in kidney stones; however, a recent study showed that higher levels of calcium actually decreased the risk of kidney stones. In other words those patients who had the highest intake of calcium actually had the lowest risk of kidney stones. |
| She experienced increasing abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting.
While lying down, she was able to feel a mass in her lower abdomen. Obviously this frightened her terribly, and she went back to her doctor immediately. When he reexamined her, he could feel a mass the size of a grapefruit. He ran a blood test called a CA 125, which is a cancer marker for gynecological cancers and bowel cancers. Kymberly's marker was extremely high, and surgery was scheduled right away.
At age twenty-one, Kymberly had ovarian cancer. |
| He returned to the hospital within twenty-four hours due to increasing abdominal pain, bloody diarrhea, and vomiting. Mark was now much sicker than he was before the operation.
The young boy was readmitted to the hospital; however, the local doctors were puzzled. They referred Mark to the pediatric gastroenterology department at Loma Linda University Medical Center; there doctors placed him immediately in the pediatric intensive care unit. They performed a colonoscopy the next day and took several biopsies of his small bowel and colon. |
| Again, his home stay was a brief one, and within a week Mark was in so much abdominal pain he had to be readmitted to the hospital.
Physicians generally treat patients with autoimmune diseases with drugs that suppress the immune system. Since the body's own immune system is attacking it, it is logical to aggressively quell its activity. But one of the major side effects of these potent drugs is that they wipe out the natural antioxidant defense too. Mark's Crohn's disease was finally coming under control, but his depressed immune system left him vulnerable to all kinds of infections. |
| By this point he was experiencing waves of severe abdominal pain. Desperate for relief, he asked the doctor to take out whatever was causing the pain. He underwent all kinds of tests, including CT scans, ultrasounds, x-rays, and numerous blood tests. So you can imagine Matt's shock when no diagnosis became apparent. He was sent home with only a painkiller.
Matt had recently been reading about nutritional supplementation and decided to start an aggressive supplement program. But he did not improve very much. He still felt miserable. He felt achy all over, and he remained extremely fatigued. |
| Mark slowly began to improve but still struggled with abdominal pain and side effects from the drugs. Gradually his doctors took him off prednisone but not the Imuran. Mark's mom and dad consulted me again, and I recommended that they seek a second opinion from a private pediatric gastroenterologist.
After seeing how well Mark was doing aside from Imuran's side effects, the private gastroenterologist felt that it would be well worth trying to get Mark off of all drugs, including the pain medication and Imuran. |

| Improvements lasted or even increased at 12 months, and were most marked for abdominal pain, bloating and distension. Anxiety and depression improved at one year in the smaller study of 48 patients, but not in the study of 87 patients. The reason for that disparity is unclear, Simren says.

Asians in general and Chinese and Koreans in particular lack the enzyme that breaks down the toxic acetaldehyde so even small amounts of alcohol lead to a fast pulse, abdominal pain, and a red face. For this reason, alcoholism is rarely existent in Asia; Asians would simply die in large numbers from alcohol poisoning. Also, some people pass out after the first (and only drink) because they have no natural defenses against acetaldehyde.

Examples of symptoms include abdominal pain, diarrhea and constipation, gas, nausea, bloating, heartburn, excessive excretion of mucus from the colon, fatigue, some degree of anxiety or depression, and bowel urgency or incontinence. A more serious condition not necessarily resulting from IBS is inflammatory bowel disease, which causes ongoing inflammation of the intestines and includes ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. Inflammatory bowel disease affects fewer people and tends to be hereditary. |
