| In other studies at the clinic, patients with chronic pain reported a 50% reduction in their suffering after learning how to meditate.16
"Through meditation, we can learn to access the relaxation response and to be aware of the mind and the way our attitudes produce stress," according to Joan Borysenko, Ph.D., a pioneer in the field of mind-body medicine

The illness is defined by a series of psychological symptoms, not only beginning with "persistent, sad, anxious or 'empty' moods, feelings of hopelessness, pessimism, worth-lessness, helplessness, and so forth, but also "headaches, digestive disorders, and chronic pain" that does not respond to treatment.25
We return to Job's lament.
"By today's standards," said Fran, "it is obvious that he suffered from clinical depression, presumably..." she thumbed through the volume, "a 'major' and 'recurrent' depressive disorder, most likely 296.3x in DSM-IV-TR.

Some people have abused their bodies in this way to such an extent that they suffer from excruciating chronic pain, although the causal problem may actually be only a minor one. When painkillers are no longer effective enough, some people may even wish to take their lives to obtain the desired relief. |
| These conditions can create chronic pain in the neck and shoulders. Please note that after intestinal cleansing, this man's body posture returned to normal.
Physical movement becomes increasingly difficult once the spinal structure has been altered in this or other abnormal ways. Consequently, lifting heavy objects or bending to the floor can cause muscle spasms and back pain for days and weeks, and it can even dislocate discs. In many cases, the enlarged colon puts pressure on the kidneys and urinary ducts (ureters) and displaces them. |

A number of herbs can effectively dissolve kidney stones within a period of three to six weeks. (See "The Kidney Cleanse" in Chapter 7, Employing Nature's Healing Powers.) Regardless of whether someone has been diagnosed with kidney stones or not, doing a kidney cleanse once or twice a year has tremendous curative and preventive benefits. The kidney cleanse not only improves overall physical health, but also reduces stress, fear and anxieties.

Teitelbaum: Well, I've been treating chronic pain for over 25 years now. I'm the medical director of the Annapolis Research Center for Effective Chronic Fatigue and Fibromyalgia Therapies. Again, I have no problem with medications. I use a lot of prescriptions. But -- you want to remember -- it's kind of like having a whole tool kit if you're a builder. You want to have a hammer -- which is what the medications are and surgery is -- but you want pliers, wrenches, saws and everything else. |

I've experienced chronic pain, and I know what that feels like. But now I do Pilates and engage in outstanding nutrition and the pain is gone.
The body is designed to be healthy, it's not supposed to hurt. If you feed your body right and if you use and mobilize all those joints, they will not hurt, even to the age of 100. There's no reason why we can't live to 100 in a state of perfect health with outstanding cognitive function, free of chronic pain. But to do that, you have to use it. I firmly believe in the concept of "use it or lose it. |

When the stimulating stress hormones become overactive, as they do with chronic pain, they can affect brain cells and produce cell death, perhaps not immediately, but over time.
We don't react piecemeal; the system reacts as an organic whole. For the parasympath, migraine is an example of the reaction. Lack of effort at birth was life-saving because of the relative lack of oxygen, but now any stress can activate the symptom. The person remains in the energy-conserving mode due to the imprint of lack of oxygen. Remember, the prototype is the first major life-saving maneuver of our lives. |

Once you start down the path of chemical suppression of symptoms of pain, you begin a journey into the world of harmful medicine that will only leave you diseased and bankrupt, addicted to a dozen pharmaceuticals and suffering from liver failure, kidney disease, brain fog and chronic pain. Think carefully about what you're doing to your body. It's the only one you've got, and nature intends for a woman to have periods. Menstruation is not a disease. And womanhood is not a medical condition. |

The increased addiction potential of this class of drugs if taken long-term is the reason J never use them in my chronic pain management regimen. If you are taking this drug, I urge you to ask your doctor about referring you to a physician expert in pain management or at least have him or her read this chapter.
Other Drugs for Pain
On occasion, I try other medicines before moving to opiates. For people with substantial tenderness in the neck, shoulders, and back, I sometimes try injections of a drug similar to the one used by your dentist to numb up your teeth before fixing a cavity. |

Let me make it clear that I do not use this class of medicines because chronic pain has anything to do with epilepsy, but because these drugs really do help reduce pain. Also, several of them have succeeded in relieving FM symptoms in double-blind placebo-controlled trials. Moreover, my own experience with antiepileptics has been positive, and their side effects are fairly minimal. One nice side benefit is that they often reduce headaches, too.
The first one I use is gabapentin (Neurontin). |

Widespread bodily pain is the other major symptom that I deal with in my practice. It is such a common and often disabling symptom that pain management centers have sprung up all over the United States. But you may not have such a center in your own community, so here I want to lay out the protocol I use to help people deal with their chronic widespread pain. You should plan to share this protocol with your doctor.
Step 1. |
| If you suffer from chronic pain, go to a pain management center. But before anything else, make sure that you have a primary-care physician with whom you feel comfortable and who will take an active interest in your health, including working with any specialists you may see. Your primary-care physician may well see critical facts in your overall medical record that one or more specialists have missed. Check out doctors online to see if they've published papers, spoken or written about cases like yours, or been identified as taking an "integrative" approach to care. |
| Percocet has no role in the treatment of chronic pain. If you are on your third visit to a doctor and either your pain remains or you are taking Percocet or another such narcotic, you need a referral to a pain management center. They will certainly know how to help you.
Is your specialist communicating with your primary-care doctor? If your doctor referred you to the specialist, then it is automatic for the specialist to send the results of the consultation back to him or her. But if you organized your own referral, the specialist has no one with whom to communicate except you. |

CHRONIC PAIN
One in three Americans suffers from some kind of chronic or recurring pain. Seventy-six million of us experience back pain; thirty-six million endure the pain of arthritis; twenty million have migraine headaches. Pain is a symptom of a greater problem, one often caused by a brain chemical deficiency. |

Women with fixed ovaries and large endometriomas may only report mild discomfort, while those with visibly smaller lesions may report severe and chronic pain. Upon surgery, these lesions are found to extend more deeply; they are possibly more influenced by circulating estrogens.17 Research has found that the severity of symptoms is correlated with the depth of the lesions rather than the number of lesions.18
The abnormalities found in women with endometriosis and the conditions that may predispose them to it are complex. |

Let's talk about your book, "Pain Free 1-2-3: A Proven Program for Eliminating chronic pain Now." How long has this book been available?
Teitelbaum: One month in McGraw-Hill. It came out about four and a half weeks ago.
Mike: You mentioned briefly that you cover some natural and even conventional pain control.
Teitelbaum: Absolutely, because it is never acceptable to leave somebody in pain. You can almost always get people comfortable, usually without narcotics. But, if you need narcotics, you need narcotics. The vast majority can get pain- free without them. |

Since chronic pain is caused by chronic congestion, the liver, intestines, kidneys, and lymphatic system should be cleansed before attempting to treat the pain. In almost every case, this approach relieves all pain and restores vibrant health along with proper immune functions.

Acute pain comes on suddenly and is intense, such as a crick in the neck, while chronic pain can last for more than three months.
Neck pain and stiffness is often the result of muscle strain, but it can be a symptom of a variety of more serious illnesses, so it is always a good idea to get a medical assessment. It can be associated with conditions such as meningitis, encephalitis, spinal cord injuries, and some types of cancer, so it is important to rule out these conditions. Often, there is no obvious cause for neck pain. |

Combining Painkillers Can Be Dangerous
Patients who regularly take an over-the-counter (OTC) nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), such as ibuprofen (Advil), and aspirin in the same day have a two to three times higher risk of ulcers and gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding as those who take either alone. |
| Pain control is not a luxury—it is a medical necessity. chronic pain can cause muscle weakness due to inactivity, insomnia and fatigue. It can even "rewire" the nervous system, increasing your sensitivity to pain signals and causing pain in areas that were previously pain-free.
PAIN INVENTORY
Your doctor's ability to prescribe the right treatment depends on knowing exactly where, when and how your body hurts. Before your next appointment, create a personal pain inventory by answering the following questions...
•Where is the pain? |
| The virus affects the nerves, so it can leave victims in chronic pain, a condition called postherpetic neuralgia (PHN). Discuss these options with your doctor...
•Ketamine. This prescription anesthetic can decrease shingles pain within days in 65% of the cases. Apply a gel containing 5% ketamine two to three times daily to the painful area.
•Lidoderm. Place a patch over the area of maximum pain.
•Neurontin. This prescription medication can also reduce pain. To avoid side effects, start by using 100 to 300 mg, one to four times a day.
•Tricyclic antidepressant. |
| His • announcement may have discouraged some people who have chronic pain from getting appropriate treatment, but Limbaugh is not typical.
Addiction is rare when prescription painkillers are used properly. The most powerful class of painkillers—opioids, such as codeine, morphine and oxycodone (Oxycontin)—are potentially addictive, but less than 1% of pain patients ever become addicted.
People who take these drugs can develop a drug tolerance and then require higher doses. |
